Enrolled Agents (EAs) and Annual Filing Season Program

Wilkes University is an IRS approved Continuing Education (CE) provider for Other Tax Return Preparers (OTRPs) and Approved Continuing Education Provider LogoEnrolled Agents (EAs).  

According to www.irs.gov, the following continuing education requirements are needed:

  • Enrolled Agents
    • 72 hours every three years 
      • Obtain a minimum of 16 hours per year (2 of which must be on ethics)
      • NOTE: If an enrolled agent opts to take an AFTR course, they will not receive credit toward their Enrolled Agent CE requirements.
  • Annual Filing Season Program - Record of Completion Holder Requirements for 2016 - the following needs to be completed before December 31, 2017
    • Non-Exempt Preparers
      • Annual Federal Tax Refresher Course (6 hours)
      • Federal Tax Law (10 hours)
      • Ethics (2 hours)
    • Exempt Preparers 
      • Tax Law Update (3 hours)
      • Federal Tax Law (10 hours)
      • Ethics (2 hours)

Annual Federal Tax Refresher Course

The Annual Federal Tax Refresher (AFTR) Course and Test is part of the voluntary IRS Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP) where non-credentialed tax preparers can receive an AFSP - Record of Completion Certificate.  Participants must complete the online course and test with a minimum grade of 70%.  The test will be 100 questions and must be completed within 3 hours.

In 2017, the the Annual Federal Tax Refresher Course (6 CPEs), 10 CPEs in Federal Tax Law and 2 CPE credits in Ethics need to be completed for the program (18 CPE credits total).  These need to be completed by December 31, 2017.

Self Study

The following self study programs are accredited for Enrolled Agents and Tax Preparers:

To register for the class, you may go to our registration system by following the links through Continued Learning  There is now an “Accounting CPE Home Study” category where the class is located.  Once you register, you will receive a confirmation email with login instructions.

To receive full credit for the class, you must view each video segment and answer the polling questions.  You do not have to answer the polling questions correctly.  However, you must receive a 70% or better on the final exam to receive credit.  If you score below a 70%, you may take the exam again after an hour.  You can take the exam as often as you need to until you pass, waiting an hour in-between each attempt.  Once you pass the final, you may complete the course evaluation and print your certificate.

In Person

Seminars are held at The Woodlands Inn & Resort, Highway 315, Wilkes-Barre.  Registrations may be made by telephone, mail or fax. Payment by check or credit card (Visa or MasterCard) will be accepted. 


Participate from anywhere with our online webinars.  Classes are broadcast live from the Wilkes University campus or from The Woodlands Inn & Resort.  To test you system requirements for the webinars, please go to systemcheck.digitalsamba.com/ .  You only have to pass the tests for the United States. A dial-up connection is not recommended.
