Wilkes University Senior Kevin Schiel of Wyoming, Pa., Wins Award From Pennsylvania Consortium on Video Games

Wilkes University senior Kevin Schiel, of Wyoming, Pa., won the College Tabletop award at the Pennsylvania Consortium on Video Games at Harrisburg University, a statewide competition. Schiel, who is an integrative media major, developed "Planets: The Game," an innovative non-digital tabletop card game. He designed the cards for the game in his Integrative Media Projects 2 class.

Wilkes University seniors, Kevin Schiel, of Wyoming,Pa., and Delmis Machado, of Berwick, Pa., won Gold Award Placement in the 2016-2017 American Advertising Awards - Student Division - AAF District Two. A Gold ADDY is recognition of the highest level of creative excellence and is judged to be superior to all other entries in the category. Both are integrative media majors at Wilkes.

The Allan P. Kirby Enterprise Center at Wilkes University has become part of one of the largest incubator networks in the U.S. The Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania (BFTP/NEP) expanded its Ben Franklin Business Incubator Network to include the Kirby Enterprise Center and three others, bringing the total number of incubators in its network to 14.

Wilkes University Business Professor Morgan Clevenger Receives Award for Research

Morgan Clevenger, assistant professor of business in the Jay S. Sidhu School of Business and Leadership, was awarded an 2016 CASE Award for Outstanding In-Progress Research in Integrated Educational Advancement. Clevenger was recognized for his research project, "Corporate Citizenship in American Higher Education." Clevenger will receive a cash prize of $2,000 along with an announcement of his scholarship in CASE's magazine, Currents, and its publication BriefCASE.

Christine Walsh of Lebanon Twp., N.J., Creates Video Application for Campus Job That Went Viral

Wilkes University freshman Christine Walsh applied to be a resident assistant - and became a bit of an Internet sensation in the process. As part of her application, Walsh, a Lebanon Township, N.J., native, created a video to the tune of the Grammy Award-winning "Uptown Funk." It has garnered more than 11,000 views - and counting. The Drs. Robert S. and Judith A. Gardner Educational Forum Series at Wilkes University highlights current issues in education. Series co-founders Robert S. and Judith A. Gardner are faculty members in the Wilkes University Department of Education. According to Robert S. Gardner, he and his wife started the series as an outgrowth of their classroom teaching. Wilkes University's Contemporary History Project will present a lecture, "Metropolitan Battlefields: Urban Conflict in Iraq Before and After the 'Surge', " on Feb. 29. It will be given by Dan Bisbee, a doctoral candidate in security and intelligence studies at the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School for Public and International Affairs. Bisbee will discuss major trends in urban conflict and provide an analysis of warfare and governance in the cities of Iraq over the past decade. The lecture will be held in the Miller Room of the Henry Student Center from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The lecture is open to the public and admission is free.

Wilkes University President Signs Agreement With Vice President of Panama

Wilkes University President Patrick F. Leahy has signed an agreement with, Isabel de Saint Malo de Alvarado, vice president and minister of foreign affairs for Panama. It paves the way for the University to offer English language training and other academic offerings to that country's diplomatic corps and other staff members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Wilkes University Reschedules Jan. 23 Admissions Open House

Wilkes University is rescheduling the admissions open house scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23 due to the impending winter storm expected in the region. The open house will be held on the snow date of Jan. 30.

Wilkes University announces the opening of a full-service Starbucks on campus. Located in the University Center on Main at 169. S. Main St., Starbucks at Colonel Gambini's Café brings the largest and most recognized coffee brand in the world to the University and to downtown Wilkes-Barre. Lanie Jordan, executive director of the Wilkes University Family Business Alliance, was named a fellow of the Family Firm Institute at its 2015 Global Conference, Oct. 21-24 in London, England. Jordan earned the additional designation of ACFBA - Advanced Certificate in Family Business Advising. National Counterintelligence Executive William Evanina Delivers Economic Espionage Lecture Nov. 12 At Wilkes University

Wilkes University alumnus and National Counterintelligence Executive William "Bill" Evanina will discuss issues of cyber security and theft of personally identifiable information on Thursday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. in the ballroom of the University's Henry Student Center. Evanina's lecture, "Economic Espionage: Don't Be A Victim," will provide business owners and individuals with information on the threat to our national security and how to better protect themselves from this threat. Wilkes University Announces $3.3 Million Gift To Nursing School

Wilkes University has received a $3.3 million gift - the largest in the institution's history - to support its School of Nursing. The gift, given by local businessman and philanthropist John J. Passan of Wilkes-Barre, and his wife, Ann, will be used to create a dedicated, permanent endowment for the school. The gift will transform nursing education at Wilkes for both graduate and undergraduate nursing students, enabling expanded opportunities for technology and professional development experiences.

Wilkes University's Veterans Council Awarded $10,000 VetCenter Initiative Grant

Wilkes University's Veterans Council has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the VetCenter Initiative grant program, a partnership between Student Veterans of America (SVA) and The Home Depot Foundation to renovate a center for veterans on campus. A space in Conyngham Hall has been designated as a veteran resource center, and will serve as a focal point for veteran's activities on campus.

The Family Business Alliance at Wilkes University will host Patricia Mikelson and George Brown, the third- and fourth-generation family team of the Highlights for Children publishing company, on Wednesday, Aug. 26. Mikelson and Brown will present "Highlights of Healthy Communication in the Family Business." The presentation will discuss the evolution of Highlights' communication plan and ways for family businesses to lay the framework for a healthy communication process. The event will be held in the Henry Student Center Ballroom, 84 West South Street, on the Wilkes campus. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with a light breakfast. Charles J. Pierce is the new assistant director of the Allan P. Kirby Center for Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship at Wilkes University. Wilkes University Freshmen Help Community During Summer Orientation

Members of Wilkes University's incoming freshman class will pitch in to help the Wyoming Valley community as part of their summer orientation on Monday, June 29 and Monday, July 13. About 300 students at each orientation session will volunteer at locations that include senior centers, youth centers, parks, the CEO's Weinberg Food Bank, and many other organizations.

Wilkes University will host the Veterans Career and Education Boot Camp on Monday, May 11 in the Henry Student Center, located at 84 W. South Street, Wilkes-Barre. The event will begin with a registration and networking session at 8 a.m. Light refreshments will be served. All current and former military personnel are invited to attend.

Three Wilkes University professors and their students are researching family businesses in northeast Pennsylvania in conjunction with the Family Business Alliance at Wilkes University. The lead researchers are Morgan Clevenger, assistant professor of entrepreneurship, Ellen Newell, assistant professor of psychology, and Jeffrey Alves, professor of entrepreneurship and dean of the Jay S. Sidhu School of Business and Leadership. Also assisting is Lanie Jordan, executive director of the Family Business Alliance at Wilkes University.

Theoretical physicist and bestselling author Brian Greene is known for bringing cutting-edge scientific concepts to the public in entertaining ways. On Sunday, April 26, Greene visits Wilkes University as guest speaker for the Rosenn Lecture in Law and Humanities. Greene's lecture, "Science Matters: Inspiring the Next Generation of Maverick Thinkers," will be at 7:30 p.m, in the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing Arts. The event is free and open to the public, and will be followed by a book signing.

Empty Bowls Raises $10,000 for Area Food Banks

Volunteers from the Empty Bowls committee recently presented a $10,000 check to representatives of the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen, the Commission on Economic Opportunity and the food bank at Luzerne County Community College. The funds were raised at the third annual Empty Bowls event in November 2014 and will be divided among the three organizations. The event is sponsored by Wilkes University, King's College, Wyoming Seminary and Luzerne County Community College. The next Empty Bowls event will take place at Wilkes on November 15, 2015.

Wilkes University Scientist Leads Research Team Awarded $1 Million National Science Foundation Grant

Ned Fetcher, scientist and coordinator of the Institute for Environmental Science and Sustainability at Wilkes University, is the principal investigator on a research team that has been awarded a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to study the effects of climate change on plants. The team will study the effect of a changing climate on tussock cottongrass, a plant indigenous to tundra ecosystems in Alaska. The grant funds research entitled "Collaborative Research: Local adaptation in a dominant arctic tundra sedge (Eriophorum vaginatum) and its effects on ecosystem response in a changing climate."
