Wilkes must distinguish itself better in the academic marketplace if it...
is to achieve long-term strength and stability through an increase in brand strength in Northeastern Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic region. With the goal of creating an exceptional student learning experience, this project will create a unique system of mentoring opportunities that will distinguish Wilkes and University priorities, and with the support of the branding strategy, create a sharply defined and stronger institutional identity.
The University will concurrently address the initiatives of the Signature Undergraduate Experience (SUE). Without sustained focus and eventual achievement of the SUE goals, our ability to succeed with mentoring will be impeded.
The Mentoring Task Force has adopted the following purpose statement to guide its work:
Wilkes University embraces a culture that is committed to developing mentoring relationships. These connections and networks will be manifested in a variety of ways, giving students not only the opportunity to be mentored, but to mentor others. Developing and sustaining relationships that provide personal and professional guidance will be the hallmark of a Wilkes education.
Short Term (Year 1) Project Outcomes...
- Create an initial mentoring purpose statement for the campus;
- Define measures of mentoring success for Wilkes to include measures of student learning, persistence, graduation rates, job placement and satisfaction;
- Identify current mentoring activities on campus; taking particular note of those activities with great promise and applicability across other units;
- Map existing activities in relation to one another and to other aspects of the student learning experience including co-curricular and extra curricular activities;
- Identify gaps, conflicts and opportunities for collaboration for enhanced performance;
- Benchmark best practice mentoring organizations;
- Design and implement a campus-wide system for integrating mentoring practices into learning and living for all students; and
- Continue improvement processes based on results as revealed by measures.
