LEED® Green Associate Exam Prep
March 8, 2013 8 AM-5PM
Co-sponsored by the Northeast PA branch of the Central PA USGBC

This course introduces attendees to the principles
behind high performance green building and the LEED Green Building Rating System, the most widely used tool for assessing green buildings worldwide. The discussion will begin by discussing what green buildings are, why they are important, and how they are created. The concept of integrative design is then introduced as the key to engaging LEED cost-effectively, followed by an introduction of LEED, the structure of the LEED Rating system, its purpose, and its certification process. The remainder of the course will focus on the core concepts of LEED, its intent, and the principles associated its credits, which are organized around five primary categories of environmental and human health issues. The course will conclude with a
discussion of the LEED exam structure and by outlining the process for becoming a LEED Accredited Professional.

Instructor: John Boecker, AIA, an architect living in Wellsville, PA, currently serves as a partner in 7group, a green building consulting firm. He has concentrated his architectural practice exclusively on designing high-performance green buildings since 1996. He has practiced architecture in New Haven, Pittsburgh and Los Angeles, in addition to his current workplace in Central Pennsylvania.

Hydric Soils- The Field Indicators and More
The course is an introduction to describing hydric soils and the use and meaning of the regional field indicators for hydric soils. The course is designed for the licensed profession (engineer, surveyor, geologist), soil scientist, and wetland scientist. This class will teach you how to effectively describe soils, interpret soil reports, and who use the Hydric Soil Indicators in the Regional Supplements to the Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual. You will learn the basic processes that take place in saturated soil and how to “read the story” in a soil profile. The training includes a field introduction to identifying layers, distinguishing concentrations and depletions, and preparing hydric soil descriptions from soil profiles. Each student will have a chance to describe and interpret a series of soils profiles and hydrological systems.. This workshop is 50/50 lecture/field.
Instructor: Brian Oram
Cost: $310, PDH Hours: 8
Registration Deadline: March 29, 2013

April 26 – 9 AM-5 PM
Soil Morphology/Stormwater and Wastewater Management
Introduction to Soil Science and Soil Morphology for Engineers, PA Sewage Enforcement Officiers, Geologists, and other Professionals.
The course will provide an introduction into the environmental applications of soil science and soil morphology. During the presentation portion of the course, we will discuss the properties and characteristics of a soil, soil formation/ transformation, and soil hydrology. During the field portion of the course, we will be learning how to describe some of the physical properties of a soil (soil texture, structure, consistency, color), identifying soil horizons, and make interpretations related to the movement of water through the soil profile as it relates to on-site wastewater disposal and stormwater management.
Instructor: Brian Oram
Cost: $310, PDH Hours: 8
