In addition to private lessons, we are proud to offer a variety of classes in music, dance, theatre, and musical theatre for the entire community.  For the SPRING 2010 semester, the following classes will be offered:


Acting

Imagination Station

Ages 7-11                  1:00 – 1:55pm                  SUN  Feb 21st – May 16th

This is an exciting class that unleashes the imagination! Students explore the artistic aspects of performance and play-making. Drama is used to find new ways of developing the creative voice inside every child. They delve into questions such as: If you could be anything in the world, what would you be? If you could move any way at all, how would you move? Where would your imagination take you if it were set free? In addition, there is a final performance on the last day of class.  Tuition: $365

 

Young Actor’s Series: Beginning Acting

Ages 12-17                2:00 -2:30pm                            SUN Feb 21st – May 16th

A fun skill building class using a improvisation, skill building for a scene, objective, obstacles, and over acting.  Class culminates in a showcase of scenes and includes attendance of two Wilkes productions. * Classes on performance days will be longer on those days at no extra charge. Feb 28th matinee and Dracula April 18th.   Tuition:  $365

 

Dance

Intro to Ballet

[Ages 7-12]                                                                              11:00-12:00pm    Saturday

An introduction to ballet taught by Kristin Degnan, director of Ballet Northeast and Director of Dance for the Visual and Performing Arts Department of Wilkes University. Students will learn basic techniques of ballet. 

Tuition: $140

 

Jazz for Beginners

[Ages 7-12]                                                                              10:00-11:00am    Saturday

Children will learn basic techniques of modern and jazz dance.  Classes meet once a week for one hour.  All basic and fundamentals of jazz dance taught at the beginner level and all students are invited to participate in a year-end recital.

Tuition: $140

 

Intermediate/Advanced Jazz

[Ages 13 and up]                                                                     12:00-1:00pm Saturday

This class is designed for the more experienced dancer and focuses on technique and more challenging choreography in all jazz styles.

Modern Jazz Dance/Body Conditioning

[Ages 13 and up]                                                               10:00-11:00pm     Tuesday

You don’t have to be proficient in dance to enjoy this class that covers an array of all modern dance!  Tone and condition your body while learning dance in the styles of modern dance, hip-hop, and musical theatre.  Experience a fun way to learn modern dance technique while reaping the benefits of body conditioning.

Tuition: $140

 

Indian Classical Dance

All Ages                       1/29 – 6/11                                                 Friday   3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

These classes offer an opportunity to learn the Bharata Natyam style of Indian Classical Dance.  This course work will include basic steps, movements, hand gestures, as well as an introduction to the history, style and rhythmic base.  Beginner, intermediate, both private and semi-private classes are available.  Students continuing spring semester instruction will have an opportunity to perform the annual dance recital and evening of Indian Culture.

Tuition:  Semi-private middle school and elementary school intermediate levels $300.  Advanced private classes $300.  Beginner class for all ages $250.

 
Middle Eastern Dancing

[Middle school through college age students]            Dates: TBA           Thurs  7:30 -8:30 p.m.

This beginner class focuses on posture, hand/arm positioning, traveling steps, shimmies, and isolations. Beginning class structure is based on a Western format of clear movement breakdowns, drilling basics, hands-on corrections and integrating movements.  This class is designed to enhance, develop, and promote body awareness, coordination, and confidence as you discover the joys of one of the oldest and most captivating dance forms.  Tuition $140

 

Music

Learn to Play Guitar

[Ages 9-16]                                                                  2/11 – 4/15 Wed 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.  

 Learn the basics of guitar in a low-stress class setting. Students will learn guitar technique, music reading, and basic chords, as well as songs chosen by the students with the guidance of the instructor.  The purpose of this class is for inquiring students to gain an overview in a group setting that may help them decide whether private instruction should be pursued.

Early Childhood Music

Kindermusik Our Time                                              [Ages 2- 3 w/ parent]  2/9-2/13     10-11am

Kindermusik Imagine That!                                      [Ages 4-5 w/ parent]     2/9-2/13      11-12pm

Every child has the potential to learn music.  Through singing, chanting, movement and rhythm activities shared by parent and child, this 6-week course will begin to increase your child’s ability to audiate (think music) and give structure to improvisation, laying the foundation for a lifetime of music.  Tuition $140  


Let’s Play in Italian

[Ages 3-5] Thurs 2/11 – 4/15   10am – 11am

[Ages 6-9] Thurs 2/11 – 4/15    TBA

Children learn Italian through musical play, immersed in Italian while learning classic Italian nursery rhymes and traditional songs as well as a wide array of different activities.  Tuition: $140


Songwriting & Improv Class

[Ages 14 and up]                                                                      2/11 – 4/15 Wed 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Creativity thrives in this 6-week course of learning techniques for melodies, hooks, and improvisation.  You’ll learn in a collaborative, supportive environment the basics of melody and lyric writing with a chance to perform your songs and receive constructive feedback from your teacher and peers.   Tuition: $200


The Bluegrass Sessions

[Ages 14 and Up]                                                                     2/3 – 3/31   Wed 7:00-8:00 p.m.

All participants of these classes will learn how to play basic twelve bar blues and harmony.  This class utilizes the guitar and banjo in explaining music theory, back-up rhythm, and lead techniques.  Students with the following instruments are encouraged to register: acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle/violin, and acoustic bass.  Beginners are encouraged to attend.  This class will help the student gain valuable experience playing and performing with others.  Tuition: $200


Workshops

Introduction to Voiceovers

April 30, 2010          [Ages 14 and up]                         7:00 PM – 9:00 PM               

Have you ever wondered whose voice you are listening to on TV and radio commercials?  This fun, informative, and interactive class will introduce you to the basics of being a Voiceover Artist.  Discuss the ins and outs of the voiceover industry, the importance of marketing and demo tapes, and much more.  The instructor will coach you while you make a recording of your voice for evaluation.  Be warned – many who have taken this class have become real bona-fide professional voice actors!  Be ready to laugh, learn and be inspired.  Tuition $90

 

Art Therapy

 My Life is Art

Art Therapy for Children and Adults

Adults    February 20 – April 10    4:30-6:00PM

Art therapy is based on the belief that the creative process of art is both healing and life-enhancing. We use the creative process to help increase judgment, cope better with stress, work through traumatic experiences, increase cognitive abilities, have better relationships with family and friends, and to just be able to enjoy life-affirming pleasures of the creative experience. Art-making is seen as an opportunity to express oneself imaginatively, authentically, and spontaneously, and an experience that can lead to personal fulfillment. This class meets once a week for 8 weeks.

Children    February 20 – April 10      6:00-7:30PM

Art therapy has been shown to help children with special needs develop their social skills with art work.  Children will use finger painting, sculpting, and sponge painting to create visual representations of their emotions.  This form of therapy has been to be beneficial with changing a child’s behavior and allowing them to stay focused on tasks, develop problem solving strategies and creative thinking.  This class meets once a week for 8 weeks
