Institute for Energy and Environmental Research at Wilkes University Hosts Nov. 7 Presentation on Community Health Impacts Of Shale Gas Development
WILKES-BARRE, PA. (Oct. 11, 2012) – The Institute for Energy and Environmental Research at Wilkes University (IEER) will host a presentation on “The Community and Environmental Health Implications of Shale Gas Development” on Nov. 7. The presentation will be given by Simona Perry, an applied anthropologist who focuses on the intersection of environmental science, community health, and public policy. The event, which is free to the public, will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Stark Learning Center 101 at Wilkes University.
Perry uses a variety of methods for describing and analyzing the everyday lives of human beings that can be used to provide public health practitioners, environmental scientists, and policy makers with information on some of the harder to monitor psychological, socio-cultural, and environmental factors that may lead to chronic stress and conflicts in individuals and communities. The presentation will share some of the observations and analyses from on-going ethnographic fieldwork in Marcellus shale gas communities from 2009-2012. Perry will also talk about studies going on in other shale communities in Pennsylvania, New York, Texas, Colorado, Alberta and Quebec.
Perry earned her doctorate in the human dimensions of fish and wildlife conservation from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and her master’s degree from the University of Washington’s School of Marine Affairs.
