(Wilkes-Barre, Pa., - Nov. 9, 2012) – Ballroom dancing aficionados will have a rare opportunity to dance to live music when the Wilkes University Chamber Orchestra holds a Viennese Ball on Dec. 8 in the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center. The event will be held from 7:30 to 11 p.m.

With band director and associate professor of music Philip G. Simon at the helm, the Chamber Orchestra will perform waltzes, polkas and popular dance tunes. The members of the Lehigh Avenue Jazz Quartet will also perform as special guests, playing popular dance music from the 1950s through the 1970s.

The Wilkes event is inspired by the style made popular by violinist, Dutch conductor and composer Andre Rieu. Rieu’s Johann Strauss Orchestra has helped renew the mainstream public’s interest in waltz music with its bawdy performance style and humorous antics.

Tickets for Wilkes’ Viennese Ball are $15 for indviduals, $30 for a couple and $7.50 for students. A $60 sponsorship also is available, which provides attendees with two tickets, program sponsor designation, their names listed in the program and four beverage tickets. Beer, wine and snacks will be available at the event.  Semi-formal attire is suggested. Parking is available in the Wilkes University Student Center parking lot or on the street.

For reservations, call 570-408-4420.
