WILKES-BARRE - Wilkes University Theatre’s production of The Race Play by Israel Horovitz was one of nine regional university productions invited to the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival at Towson University in Baltimore, Md.

The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) is a national theatre program involving 18,000 college and university students nationwide. The program has served as a catalyst improving the quality of college theatre in the U.S. More than 600 institutions showcase the work of their theatre departments and student artists to receive outside assessment by KCACTF respondents. The regional festival was held in Baltimore.

The Race Play, a 20-minute play, is part of the festival’s “fringe program” which features unique or experimental work. Race Play recreates a ten mile handicapped race on a bare stage.

This one-act play was produced in Sept. 2012 along with seven other short plays for which the KCACTF gave certificates of merit in directing to Naomi Baker, associate professor of performing arts; Joseph Dawson, associate professor and performing arts division chair; and Teresa Fallon, director of theatre.

The Race Play was directed by Dawson. The cast included associate professor Naomi Baker, James Alderiso, Luke Brady, Timothy King, Courtney Littlefield, Shaun Pierre, Samantha Prentice, Kassandra Richmond and Jennifer Villa.

The encore performance of The Race Play was performed on Jan. 15, 2013 at 11 a.m. in The Ruth Mader Theatre at Towson University in Baltimore.
