Wilkes University Promotes Faculty, Awards Tenure

Wilkes University recently awarded tenure and promoted four members of the faculty to associate professor. In addition, one faculty member was promoted to full professor. The faculty receiving promotions were as follows:

Robert Gardner of Nanticoke, Pa., was awarded tenure and promoted to associate professor of education. In 2003, he earned a doctorate from Temple University. Gardner taught in the Northwest Area School District for more than 30 years in addition to providing educational leadership and management as district superintendent. He joined the Wilkes faculty in 1989 as adjunct professor of education before his promotion to assistant professor in 2007. Gardner has received numerous awards while at Wilkes, including Outstanding Faculty Member and Innovative and Nontraditional Teaching Award.
 
Emma Qian Hao of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., was awarded tenure and promoted to associate professor of business. She earned a doctorate from Southern Illinois University in 2005, where she also taught before joining Wilkes University’s Sidhu School of Business and Leadership in 2007 as assistant professor in accounting and economics. Prior to her entering the academic community, Hao was an accountant in China.
 
Andrew Miller of Laflin, Pa., was awarded tenure and promoted to associate professor of political science. He earned a doctorate from Purdue University in 2004. He served as an adjunct professor at Butler University before joining the Wilkes faculty in 2005 as visiting assistant professor of political science. In 2012, Miller received the Wilkes Diversity Leader Faculty Award for his contributions to improve the diversity climate at Wilkes. Miller has visited Costa Rica several times for research and while leading study and service learning trips for Wilkes University students.
 
Prahlad Murthy of Larksville, Pa., was promoted to full professor of environmental engineering. Murthy earned a doctorate from Texas A&M University in 1993. He joined the Wilkes faculty in 1993, serving as visiting assistant professor, assistant professor and associate professor of environmental engineering. Since 2010 he has also served as associate dean of the Wilkes College of Science and Engineering. Murthy has received numerous honors and awards, including the Alumni Mentorship Award and Outstanding Faculty Award. He has also been involved with many mentoring grants.
 
Jeffrey Stratford of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., was awarded tenure and promoted to associate professor of biology. In 2005, he earned a doctorate from Auburn University where he also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in 2007.  He served as a biology instructor at Auburn University and Columbus State University before being joining the Wilkes faculty in 2007 as assistant professor of biology. Stratford was recognized in 2010 as Outstanding New Faculty by the Teaching Recognition and Effectiveness Committee.
