Linda Gutierrez, assistant professor of biology, will be the speaker at Wilkes University’s 2013 summer commencement ceremony. The ceremony will be held on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. at the Arnaud C. Marts Sports and Conference Center. The university expects to award about 120 degrees, including bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
Gutierrez has been recognized as the recipient of the 2013 Carpenter Award for Distinguished Teaching at Wilkes. In addition to teaching at the university, Gutierrez conducts research in inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. Her extensive experience as a scientist and her enthusiasm for including undergraduates in her research led to her selection for the Carpenter Award. She has mentored a significant number of students and has become an influential role model for students pursuing scientific and medical careers.
Gutierrez received her medical degree from the Universidad de Carabobo and continued her specialization in anatomic-pathology studies at the Universidad Central de Venezuela, both in Venezuela. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Yale University and conducted research at the University of Notre Dame until 2003 when she joined Wilkes University.
