Contact: Vicki Mayk
The Women’s and Gender Studies program at Wilkes University will observe National Domestic Violence Awareness Month with a screening of the documentary Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide on Thursday, Oct. 17, from 4-5 p.m. in the Henry Student Center Ballroom.
The film, inspired by the book of the same title, explores how women across the globe are confronting and finding meaningful solutions to oppression. The segment of the film that the program will show discusses sex trafficking in Cambodia and highlights the story of Somaly Mam, a woman who has made it her life’s work to combat trafficking and empower survivors. An information session will follow the film to educate participants about how they can help turn oppression into opportunity.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information about the event, contact Jennifer Thomas at email@example.com.
