Become a Big Brother or Big Sister
Children aged 7 to 14 years in the Wilkes-Barre area are on a waiting list for big brothers or sisters. Bigs help Littles with homework, have fun together, and talk. The time commitment is a minimum of one hour per week.
Kid's Café
This is a free after-school program for students in grades 1-6. Activities For Kids include:
# Prepare and serve nutritious evening meal
# Learn about healthy nutrition
# Get help with homework
# Have access to computers
# Explore new activities
The Kid's Cafe is open every full day of school according to the 2003-2004 Wilkes-Barre Area School District calendar from 3:30pm-5:45pm.
Tutors Needed at the McGlynn Learning Center
You can help tutor underprivledged children at the John B. McGlynn Learning Center, located in the Boulevard Town Homes. The children range in age from kindergarten to seventh grade. Help is needed Monday-Friday from 3pm-5pm. You would tutor these children in every subject an elementary school student would be taking including math, reading, spelling, English, social studies, etc. Challenge yourself and make a difference in a child's life.
Tutor children at the YMCA
Volunteer for an hour or two a week during the school year. Tutors are needed Mondays and Thursdays for shifts ranging from 1/2 hour-1 hour.
Crossroads Coffeehouse
Every Wednesday evening from 7pm to 9pm at the First United Methodist Church at 47 N. Franklin Street, Wilkes-Barre, people gather for Crossroads Coffeehouse. In a relaxed atmosphere student volunteers help set up, make coffee, put out snacks, provide entertainment, clean-up, and most importantly talk to the clients that at the coffeehouse. Crossroads Coffeehouse is a collaborative project between the First United Methodist Church, King's College, and Wilkes University.
Swing a Hammer with Habitat
A few Saturdays each semester, from 8am-2:30pm, groups of students accomplish a great deal on a Habitat House.
Osterhout Free Library
The local public library can always use assistance in reshelving their large circulation of books.
Friendly Caregiver
Students can be a friendly caregiver to an elderly person. You can visit with the senior citizen, play cards, run errands, and/or perform some light housekeeping. The minimum time commitment is one hour per week.
Heritage House
At Heritage House students can spend time with the elderly during activities such as kickball, music appreciation, bingo, cooking classes, movies, and much more.
