Juanita Rockwell – Playwright, Director. Juanita’s commissioned and professionally produced writing includes BETWEEN TRAINS, WHAT’S A LITTLE DEATH (plays w/songs) THE WORLD IS ROUND, WATERWALK (operas) CAVE IN THE SKY (puppets/multimedia) LUNAR PANTOUM (dance-theatre) IMMORTAL: THE GILGAMESH VARIATIONS (multi-playwright adaptation) PACKING/PECKING (short play) and PLAYING DEAD (co-trans. from Bros. Presnyakov). Upcoming writing projects include BACKWARDS FROM WINTER, an opera for soprano and electric cello with composer Douglas Knehans; and an album of songs written with composer Chas Marsh. As a director, she has specialized in the development of new work in new forms, including projects at The Ontological, Mabou Mines/Suite, Culture Project, The Flea (NYC) Theatre of the First Amendment (DC) City Theatre (P’burgh) Teatro Municipal (São Paolo, BR) Teatro Abya Yala (San José, CR) RS9 (Budapest) and on NPR. For six years, she was Artistic Director of Hartford’s Company One Theater, directing nearly four dozen professional premieres of work by America’s leading experimental playwrights. She was Founding Director of Towson University’s Experimental Theatre MFA for 12 years, where she continues to teach. She has received awards and funding from a variety of states, cities and foundations, including Fulbright and the NEA, and is a member of the Society of Directors and Choreographers and the Dramatists Guild.
