Juanita Rockwell – Playwright, Librettist, Lyricist, Director.
Juanita Rockwell is a playwright, librettist, lyricist, and director. As both writer and director, she specializes in the development of new work in new forms, with over 100 projects in theatre, opera, radio, film, multi-media, puppetry, dance, song and site-specific performance produced in over a dozen cities worldwide. Produced writing includes: Between Trains (play w/songs, available on CD); The World is Round (opera libretto pub. by Company One); Cave in the Sky (puppets/multimedia); Lunar Pantoum (dance-theatre); The Gigamesh Variations (multi-playwright adaptation); Packing/Pecking (short play pub. by Thinking Beard); Playing Dead (trans. Bros. Presnyakov, pub. on DVD by CITD); and The Circle (radioplay, audio at banishedproductions.org) among others. For five years, Juanita was Artistic Director of Hartford’s Company One Theater, directing professional premieres of work by leading experimental playwrights, and was Founding Director of Towson University’s interdisciplinary M.F.A. in Theatre for a dozen years. She’s received awards and funding from a variety of states, cities, and foundations, including Fulbright, NPR, the NEA and writing residencies at The Studios at Key West (TSKW), Wildacres (NC), and Ko Festival of Performance (MA).
