Arnaud C. Marts Center

The three-story, 75,000-square-foot Marts Center is regarded as

one of the finest athletic facilities in the Middle Atlantic Conference. The building includes the 3,500-seat wireless Henry Gymnasium (That means you can connect to the Internet with your wireless computer while watching a game!), health facilities, faculty offices, and the offices of the Athletic Director, the Associate Director of Athletics, and many members of the Wilkes coaching staff.

The basement of this building houses the University Fitness Center and our multi-purpose room. Indoor Commencement exercises are held in the Henry Gymnasium.  Other areas of the center provide conference facilities and classrooms.

If you were at Wilkes in 1989

you watched a veritable phoenix rise from the rubble of the demolished gymnasium that had stood on the site of the Marts Center from 1950 until it became obsolete in the 1980s.

On February 17, 1989, the Arnaud C. Marts Sports and Conference Center was dedicated in honor of Dr. Arnaud Cartwright Marts, one of Wilkes' founding fathers.

Dr. Marts was deeply involved in the development of Bucknell University where he was elected president in 1935. Soon after his election, Marts become aware of the needs of the growing Bucknell Univeristy Junior College in Wilkes-Barre and searched for leader who would allow the College to thrive. He chose Eugene Farley, who would later become the first President of Wilkes College, to become the director of BUJC in March 1936.

Marts was committed to the young College and planned efforts to help Wilkes establish itself financially. He and Farley worked with leaders of the Wilkes-Barre community to gain a more permanent home for BUJC. They approached the Stark, Chase, Weckesser, Kirby, and Conyngham families. Consequently, BUJC gained four magnificent mansions between 1937 and 1941. These homes became Chase Hall, the first Weckesser Hall, Kirby Hall and the first Conyngham Hall.
