Announcing the Wilkes University Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad in Cameroon

Contingent on funding, Wilkes University’s Center for Global Education and Diversity announces a U.S. Department of Education, Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad: Short Term Seminar to Cameroon, Africa in late summer of 2010. The Project Director, Dr. Godlove Fonjweng, and project team members Dr. James Merryman and Dr. Philip Simon will lead a team of fourteen educators from Pennsylvania on a four week trip to Cameroon to study the culture (including music), environment, educational systems and effects of climate change and globalization in Cameroon. Participants will be selected based on their interest in and intent to incorporate a greater emphasis on Africa and the developing world in their teaching curricula.  Applicants must be:

·      U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents of the United States AND

·      K-12 teachers currently teaching social sciences, humanities, foreign languages, or area studies OR an administratorcurrently responsible for planning, conducting, OR supervising programs in foreign languages or area studies at all levels OR

·      Wilkes faculty Members currently teaching social sciences, humanities, foreign languages, or area studies OR administratorscurrently responsible for planning, conducting, or supervising programs in foreign languages or area studies at all levels OR

·      Wilkes Graduate students or undergraduate students (must be at least juniors) who are currently prospective teachers of social sciences, humanities, foreign languages or area studies.

The grant will cover the costs of air fare, meals, lodging, ground transportation in Cameroon, a small stipend to participants to buy educational materials in Cameroon for their US classrooms, exit taxes in Cameroon, admission to museums, game parks and special events. Participants are expected to pay a onetime cost share program administration fee of $700.00, plus the cost of shots, passports, visa and other incidental expenses.
