It's All About the People.

Sociology is a field committed to understanding human behavior. It prepares students to become thoughtful and engaged citizens in our ever-changing world.

The major provides a foundation for students who are interested in a variety of careers including social services, counseling, business and industry, education, and research.

Our program is about mentors who

work one-on-one with students to ensure they are trained in the main theoretical and methodological traditions of sociology, yet accommodate students with diverse career goals and plans.

Students in the Sociology program gain real-world experience

through internships at places like Luzerne County Children and Youth, Children's Service Center, Office of the Aging, Wyoming Valley Drug and Alcohol Services, Domestic Violence Service Center, and the Victims Resource Center.

Other hallmarks of the program include a rigorous

three-semester capstone sequence that allows students to acquire the research, writing, and statistical skills necessary to succeed in today's competitive work environment.

An example of our students' efforts: Sarah Brandt (class of 2004) was awarded the outstanding student paper award at the Pennsylvania State Sociological Society meeting.

A concentration in Anthropology

is also available to Sociology majors. The curriculum is designed to provide you with a solid grounding in the fundamentals of cultural anthropology and an opportunity to study cultural diversity.

A unique feature of the program is flexibility.

The Sociology major or minor can be easily combined with a variety of other programs to enhance employment prospects and further develop your interests.
