Return to Wilkes Magazine - Summer 2011
More than 800 undergraduate and graduate students received degrees on Saturday, May 21 when Wilkes held its 64th Spring Commencement at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Attorney Robert Listenbee, who received an honorary doctorate of laws degree at the ceremony, delivered the commencement address. Wilkes honored Listenbee for his work in improving the juvenile justice system in Pennsylvania. In August 2009, Listenbee was appointed to the Interbranch Commission on Juvenile Justice, where he has examined the violation of the constitutional rights of over 6,000 children in the juvenile courts of Luzerne County.
Wilkes senior Anthony Dorunda delivered remarks on behalf of the senior class. Dorunda was the recipient of the Alumni Award for Leadership. Other seniors receiving special honors at the ceremony were Konstantina Papathomas and Matthew Kogoy who received the Wandell Award, presented to the male and female undergraduate students with the highest grade-point average in the graduating class. Both earned perfect 4.0 grade-point averages.
Two students were honored with the Teresa Jordan and Frank Mehm Prize, awarded annually to the undergraduate who most nearly represents the ideal Wilkes student respecting moral courage, unselfishness, and noteworthy extracurricular participation significantly advancing the University on and off campus. This year’s winners were Sean LaFleur and Santino Gabos.
