Mathematics

Why major in Mathematics?

Mathematics is a prominent player in our technologically advanced society. In fact, many math majors do not plan to become "professional mathematicians," but realize that quantitative reasoning is a valuable asset in a number of careers.

Math majors learn computational and problem-solving skills, abstract reasoning, the ability to conjecture, formulate, critique, and justify assertions, and the ability to communicate and write in a clear and concise manner. Project work also gives them teamwork experience.

What you can do with a Math degree?

Of course, your main motivation to choose math as a major should be based on your keen interest and high ability in math, but you probably have questions about the opportunities available to you after graduation. The good news is that majoring in the mathematical sciences can lead to an interesting, rewarding and well-paying career.

A math degree prepares you for a career in business, industry, government, medicine, or law. Many math graduates pursue careers as physicists, chemists, biologists, engineers, computer scientists, linguists, lawyers, doctors, and managers. Prospects are also good for well-qualified students to obtain support for graduate studies in mathematics and mathematics education.

The bottom line is, math majors often find they can follow a number of career paths that generally pay higher salaries than many other majors.

Our primary goal is to provide our majors and all students of the university with...

an outstanding educational foundation for productive and creative careers in math and related fields. Our Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees focus on one of two tracks...

  • The Standard Track is a traditional mathematics curriculum that emphasizes a broad, primarily theoretical approach. It is useful to students who want to continue studies in graduate school or pursue careers in disciplines such as physics, biology, chemistry, computer science, or engineering.
  • The Secondary Teacher Certification Track prepares students to teach mathematics at the secondary school level. Each student who successfully completes this track earns a minor in secondary education.
If you have interests and abilities in more than one field...

a double major, or a major with a minor in mathematics or statistics, could be a perfect option.
