Beyond Bean Counting.
Accountants are in demand and Wilkes accounting majors are among the most quickly recruited students. Wilkes offers a high quality program with small classes, dedicated and experienced faculty, internships in practicing accounting firms, tax experience through Volunteers in Tax Assistance (VITA), and a near perfect placement record in careers or graduate school.
The Sidhu School’s unique curriculum encourages students to develop leadership skills while also providing them with the education necessary to seek licensure as a certified public accountant (CPA) or a certified management accountant (CMA). We provide a challenging learning environment that utilizes mentoring and leadership development while developing and nurturing technical skills, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and emotional intelligence. Each semester students meet with a faculty advisor to plan for a successful professional and academic career. Wilkes junior accounting majors are trained by the OIRS and assist the local public by providing tax assistance through the Volunteers in Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
Students are also required t complete a formal internship experience. Wilkes has the oldest internship program in the area and that program provides students with opportunities to work in public, private, governmental, and not-for-profit arenas. Wilkes accounting majors interested in becoming a CPA are recruited by the Big 4, regional, and local accounting firms. Those interested in careers in other arenas have been recruited by large and small corporations, hospitals, and other not-for-profits, and government agencies.
Our accounting faculty have professional accomplishments as unique as developing a business curriculum for the Afghanistan Business Council for Peace, University of Kabul, authoring the book Introduction to the Pharmaceutical Industry, publishing in a wide variety of distinctively different peer-reviewed journals, authoring CPA exam questions, presenting at national and regional conferences, and receiving the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) Outstanding Educator Award.
