Wilkes University Orientation FAQs

When is the Orientation?

There are two different Orientation sessions for first-year students. Students only attend one of the two sessions. The first session is held Sunday, June 29 (arrival at 8:00 am) through Monday, June 30 (departure at 4:15 pm). The second session is held Sunday, July 13 (arrival at 8:00 am) through Monday, July 14 (departure at 4:15 pm).

Are all first-year students required to attend an Orientation session?

Orientation is an important part of acclimating to life at Wilkes University. Students meet with their advisors, learn about being a resident or commuter student, make their fall schedule, and so much more. We host the two different sessions to meet the needs of as many students as possible. Students should make every effort to be in attendance.

What should I bring to Orientation?

  • Casual, weather-appropriate, comfortable clothing that you can worn for team building exercises
  • Clothing and sneakers/boots (closed toe shoes) that can be worn for a community service project
  • Sunblock: For the picnic and for community service project
  • Towel and washcloth
  • Pillow(s), XL sheets (standard college bed length), and blanket.
  • Personal toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, beauty products etc.
  • Fan (some residence halls do not have air conditioning)
  • Alarm clock
  • Money for purchases at the bookstore

Who should I contact with allergy, physical, or any other accommodations?

Please contact Orient14@wilkes.edu with any accommodations that will be needed for orientation weekend as soon as possible.

What if I cannot attend either Orientation date?

Orientation is a very important part of getting acclimated to the University atmosphere. Students will learn a lot of valuable information in this short time-span. If students absolutely are unable to make it to either orientation, they should contact Orient14@wilkes.edu

What should I wear?

The first day of Orientation (Sunday) students will have time to take your ID picture that they keep for all of their time at Wilkes, so it is suggested students dress however they would like for that picture. Just remember students will be moving around a lot and still want to be comfortable. Monday morning all students participate in a community service project, where sneakers (closed toe shoes) are required, and comfortable clothing is strongly suggested.

Are commuters required to stay overnight at Orientation?

Sunday night activities at Orientation go very late into the night and Monday morning starts early, so we do require all students, even those who live close, to spend the night in our university residence halls during Orientation.

Will I be staying in the room that I will have during the school year?

Only certain residence halls are used during Orientation, so rooms at orientation will not be the students’ rooms for the year.

Will I be staying with my roommate for the school year at Orientation?

Roommates will be another first-year student who has the same mentor. Students will not be able to select who you room with at Orientation, but will have an opportunity to request a roommate for the school year during the Residence Life session at Orientation.

Will I have time to see my parents/guardians during Orientation?

We keep both students and parents very busy during Orientation. Students will eat lunch with their parents/guardians on Sunday. In general, students will not see their parents/guardians until they are picked up after the last session on Monday.

Do parents have to attend Orientation?

Although it is not required, it is strongly suggested parents attend Orientation. There is a whole track geared towards the interests of parents.

When will I get my Wilkes ID?

You will take your ID picture during your Orientation session, but you will not receive your ID until Welcome Weekend.
