Wilkes University Education Student Receives Career Development Grant From the American Association of University Women

Wilkes University graduate student Yosara Gonzalez of Hazle Township, Pa., is the recipient of a career development grant from the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Gonzalez is currently pursuing her Master of Science degree in middle level education with a focus on English/language arts at Wilkes. She will seek academic work and lead innovative community projects to empower women and girls as a result of the grant. Gonzalez is a bilingual liaison for the Hazleton Area School District.

American Revolution's Influence on Constitution Is Focus of Constitution Day Lecture at Wilkes University, Sept. 17

Wilkes University will observe Constitution Day on Tues., Sept. 17 with a lecture exploring how the American Revolution shaped the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. John Hepp, professor at history at Wilkes, will speak on the topic at 11 a.m. in room 107 of Breiseth Hall, 137-159 S. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre. The event is free and open to the public.

The award was presented during the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy annual meeting. The event was held July 13-17 at the Hyatt Regency, Chicago, Ill.

Wilkes University Doctor of Philosophy in nursing student, Jamie Hankins, was awarded the Promise of Nursing Faculty Fellowship for the Pennsylvania region. SHINE Of Luzerne County Announces Opening Of New Centers In West Pittston and Wilkes-Barre in Fall 2019

SHINE of Luzerne County at Wilkes University has announced that it will open two new centers for its after-school program in September 2019. The after-school centers will be at Kistler Elementary School in the Wilkes-Barre Area School District and the Pittston Intermediate Center in the Pittston Area School District. The addition of the two new centers brings the total number of SHINE after-school centers to nine. The expansion of the program is made possible by a $2 million grant SHINE received from the Pennsylvania Department of Education's 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant program for 2019-2024.

Wilkes University's Nesbitt School of Pharmacy will provide high school juniors and seniors with a prescription for a successful career during the Discover Pharmacy Day Camp this summer. The two-day camp begins Aug. 13 at 8:30 a.m. and concludes Aug.14 at 5 p.m. Overnight accommodations are not available. The fee is $50 per student. Deadline to apply is Aug. 1.

Leahy was recognized during the Chamber's 2019 EPIC Awards. The EPIC Awards, which stands for Extraordinary People Inspiring Community, took place on Tuesday, June 11 at Wyoming Seminary's Kirby Center for Creative Arts.

Wilkes University Students Place Third In National CQA Investment Challenge

Students in Wilkes University's Sidhu School of Business and Leadership placed third in the fifth annual Chicago Quantitative Alliance (CQA) Investment Challenge. The Wilkes team, called Wilkes Gold, competed against 50 teams, beating students from The University of Chicago, CalTech, Carnegie Mellon MBA, Duke University, Cornell University, University of Michigan, Washington University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Wilkes team received $1,000 for their third-place finish.

The Sordoni Art Gallery at Wilkes University presents Simply Picasso from May 31 through June 2. The pop-up exhibition features a ceramic piece created by Pablo Picasso at the Madoura pottery studio in Vallauris, France. The piece will be on display and open to the public from 12 noon to 4 p.m. during the three-day exhibition.

The state of education was the topic of discussion when Noe Ortega, Pennsylvania Department of Education deputy secretary for postsecondary and higher education, visited Wilkes University to meet with administrators, faculty and staff on Monday, May 13.

Wilkes University Awards Nearly 800 Degrees at 72nd Spring Commencement

Wilkes University awarded 797 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at its 72nd spring commencement ceremonies on May 18. The ceremony for graduate students receiving doctoral and master's degrees was held at 10 a.m., while the ceremony for undergraduates receiving bachelor's degrees was held at 3 p.m. Both ceremonies were held in the McHale Athletic Center in the University Center on Main, 169 S. Main Street in Wilkes-Barre.

Wilkes University Student Pharmacists Are Matched With Post-Graduate Year Residencies

Wilkes University's Nesbitt School of Pharmacy continues to match student pharmacists seeking post-graduate residency training at a rate of 15 percent above the national average. Eighty percent of students and alumni from Wilkes University's Nesbitt School of Pharmacy were successfully matched into residency training programs in 2019. Twenty-six Wilkes students receiving the doctor of pharmacy degree in May 2019 were accepted into programs.

Wilkes University Nesbitt School of Pharmacy student Taylor Hodle of Dallas, Pa., was named the 2019 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Walmart Scholar. The Walmart Scholar program provides a $1,000 scholarship for students to attend the 2019 AACP Annual Meeting and Teachers Seminar in Chicago, Ill. Hodle is a fourth-year student pharmacist.

Helen Davis, associate professor of English, received the Carpenter Award for Teaching. The award, considered Wilkes' highest honor for teaching, recognizes an outstanding member of the faculty and includes a $1,000 award and framed certificate. The name of the recipient is also inscribed on a permanent plaque on campus. The awardee is nominated by his or her full-time colleagues and must have been a full-time employee for at least three years.

Wilkes University's Chapter of Tri Beta National Biological Honor Society Receives Bertholf Award As Best Chapter in U.S.

The Wilkes University Theta Delta chapter of Beta Beta Beta national biological honor society has been recognized as the top chapter in the nation with the 2017-2018 Lloyd M. Bertholf Award. The award recognizes a chapter which has best promoted the triple aims of Beta Beta Beta: scholarship, dissemination of scientific information and promotion of biological research. It is the first time that the Wilkes University chapter has received the top recognition. The chapter previously had received an honorable mention. The award is determined by data which is collected at the end of the year and point system, then awarded the following year.

Wilkes University student pharmacist Dylan Fox was named a top ten finalist for the 2019 National Patient Counseling Competition. This is the second year Fox was a finalist. He was recognized at the American Pharmacists Association Annual Meeting held March 22 to 25 in Seattle, Wash. Fox, a Denver, Pa., native, who is a third-year pharmacy student in the four-year program, competed against students from almost all of the 140 pharmacy programs in the United States who attend the event.

Wilkes University's Nesbitt School of Pharmacy is expanding its program offerings with the launch of a Master of Science in pharmacology and medicinal chemistry. The 36-credit program is a two-year, research-driven master's degree that prepares students for a career in the pharmaceutical or biomedical industry, or for entry into a doctoral program. Wilkes University and Lackawanna College have entered into a new articulation agreement that will help Lackawanna graduates transfer to Wilkes to complete their bachelor's degree. Under the new agreement, students who earn an associate degree in early childhood education from Lackawanna can transfer into the Wilkes bachelor's degree in elementary and early childhood education as a junior.

Acclaimed novelist, essayist and short story writer NoViolet Bulawayo will read from her work on April 17 as part of the Allan Hamilton Dickson Fund Spring Writers Series at Wilkes University. The reading, hosted by the Wilkes English Department, will be at 7 p.m. in the Salon of Kirby Hall, 202 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre. Bulawayo also will conduct a workshop with Wilkes students that day. The event is free and open to the public.

The Sordoni Art Gallery at Wilkes University presents Ukiyo-e to Shin Hanga: Japanese Woodcuts from the Syracuse University Art Collection from April 2 through May 18. The exhibition is curated by Andrew Saluti, assistant professor and program coordinator of the graduate program in museum studies in the school of design at Syracuse University. The exhibition illustrates the transition of imagery through 250 years of the Japanese woodcut.

Wilkes University Mark Engineering Center Receives 2019 Diamond Award for Engineering Excellence

The Mark Engineering Center at Wilkes University was awarded the 2019 Diamond Award for Engineering Excellence from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania. The award was granted in the building and technology systems category. Borton-Lawson Engineering, Inc. was the engineering firm for the renovation. A formal ceremony was held Feb. 28 in Lancaster, Pa. where both organizations were recognized.

Carmen Maria Machado, author of the award-winning short story collection Her Body and Other Parties, will read from her work on March 18 as part of the Allan Hamilton Dickson Fund Spring Writers Series at Wilkes University. The reading, hosted by the Wilkes English Department, will be at 7 p.m. in the Salon of Kirby Hall, 202 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre. Machado also will conduct a workshop with Wilkes students that day. The event is free and open to the public.

Bryan Stevenson, attorney, human rights activist, executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, and author of Just Mercy, will deliver the Max Rosenn Lecture in Law and Humanities on April 14 at Wilkes University. Stevenson will speak about "American Injustice: Mercy, Humanity and Making a Difference." The event will be at 2 p.m. in the Dorothy Dickson Darte Center for the Performing Arts, 239 S. Wilkes University will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 22 with an event, "Do The Right Thing." Sponsored in collaboration with the Campus Interfaith office and the office of Diversity Affairs, it will take place from 11 a.m. to noon in the Henry Student Center Ballroom, 84 West South Street, Wilkes-Barre. The event theme draws from a famous King sermon, in which he stated, "The time is always right to do what is right. "

Wilkes University's Small Business Development Center has set a record for the amount of financing that it secured for clients in 2018. More than $17,456,000 was secured by the SBDC to help clients to start or expand their businesses. It is the highest amount achieved by the center since its formation in 1980.
