WILKES-BARRE, PA. – Wilkes University will celebrate the experiences of students and faculty who have studied in foreign countries when it announces the winners of its first Study Abroad Essay Contest. The awards ceremony for the contestwill be held on Wed., Feb. 13, from 4 – 5 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Henry Student Center.

The essay contest was sponsored by The Center for Global Education and Diversity. According to Godlove Fonjweng, Wilkes director of global education, “The goal of the essay contest was to provide an opportunity for those who have not traveled abroad to learn from those who have done so. Further, we want students who are interested in Study Abroad or who are not sure if study abroad is for them to meet students and faculty who have traveled abroad and to ask them questions. These essays will serve as reading material for those who are thinking about studying abroad.”

Twenty six people entered the contest. Twelve students and 14 faculty wrote about their experiences in 14 countries: Uganda, England, Spain, Nepal, Peru, Haiti, Italy, Mexico, Southeast Asia, Russia, Denmark, Cuba, Kenya, Central America and Ireland.

Entries were accepted in three categories: 1. Wilkes students from the U.S. who have studied aborad or who are currently studying abroad; 2.  international students studying abroad at Wilkes; and 3. faculty, graduate students and staff who have studied abroad now and when they were students.
