Why Study Spanish at Wilkes?

Small class sizes, individualized attention and the flexibility to combine the Spanish major with a wide range of other programs enables you to create a program uniquely your own. Double-majors are encouraged, as are a large choice of interesting minors to tailor the program to meet your goals.

A key component of your experience as a Spanish major is the freedom to travel. Opportunities include study abroad in Colombia or Spain, and summer trips to Peru with your professor and fellow students. You can earn three to 15 credits per trip, and scholarships are available for study abroad programs.

Interested in research? Advanced students can work on grant-funded literature research with Professor Paola Bianco.

What Will You Learn as a Spanish Student?

  • You’ll master the fundamentals of Spanish, with an emphasis on speaking, reading, writing and understanding through discussion, oral presentations and role-playing.

  • The study of historical, cultural, economic, and political development of the countries of Latin America will be examined, including the Pre-Columbian cultures of the Maya, Aztec and Inca.
  • Spanish literature is explored from Romanticism through contemporary literary periods, including a variety of genres.
  • You’ll develop skills in critical thinking, intercultural knowledge and an appreciation of global cultures.

Program Highlights

Internships

As a Spanish major, you’ll  have the opportunity to participate in internships. Students have been placed at Victims Resource Center, Step by Step Inc., Montessori schools, free clinics, Wyoming Valley AIDS Council, medical facilities, legal offices and more.

Cooperative Education

The three- to six-credit cooperative education program will match you with a private or public organization related to your academic interests and career goals that will immerse you in conversational Spanish in a work setting.

Senior Capstone

The culmination of your Wilkes career as a Spanish major is the senior capstone project. The capstone is an opportunity for you to design your own research presentation and share your Wilkes experiences and mastery of the Spanish language.

I expanded my global understanding by making friends and communicating with people from around the world, further developed my skills in the Spanish language, and experienced cultures and places I never otherwise would have been able to.
