Membership in Sigma Tau Delta provides opportunities for those interested in English language and literature to join with like-minded persons on local, regional, national, and international levels and to participate in and present professional work at conferences and conventions.

For an initial fee, members receive two issues of the Newsletter and one issue of The Rectangle, an award-winning literary publication to which members have the opportunity to contribute. Members are also eligible to compete for several $1,000-$2500 scholarships and awards and apply for internship and graduate assistantship opportunities.
Sigma Tau Delta, an International English Honor Society
Sigma Tau Delta was founded in 1924 at Dakota Wesleyan University and is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies external website.
The purposes of the society are to:
- confer distinction for high achievement in English language and literature to undergraduate, graduate, and professional studies;
- promote interest in literature and the English language on local campuses and their surrounding communities;
- foster the discipline of English in all its aspects, including creative and critical writing.
With more than 600 active chapters, more than 900 faculty sponsors, and approximately 7,000 members inducted annually, Sigma Tau Delta is one of the largest members of the Association of College Honor Societies.
Preliminary requirements for membership:
- Must be majoring or minoring in the discipline of English.
- Must have a minimum of two college courses in English language or literature beyond the usual requirements in freshman English.
- Must have a B (3.0) average in English.
- Must have completed at least three semesters of college course work.
- Must be currently enrolled as a graduate or undergraduate student.
