The Wilkes University English Department cordially invites you to an academic panel and ball celebrating Jane Austen's 250th birthday.

The event includes a plenary and panel, followed by a Regency-era dance demonstration and reception. We are pleased to welcome acclaimed Austen scholar, Dr. Juliette Wells, to campus to give a keynote during this Women’s History Month event.

The event will be free and open to the public, but registration will be required.

Itinerary

6 p.m.

Interdisciplinary roundtable featuring:
  • Dr. Helen H. Davis, Professor of English
  • Dr. Amy Sopcak-Joseph, Associate Professor of History
  • Mr. Stefan Zubal, Director of Dance

7 p.m.

Dance Demonstration/ & Lesson

Led by Professor Zubal and featuring members of the Wilkes University Dance Team.

About Dr. Wells

Dr. Juliette Wells, Professor of Literary Studies at Goucher College, will be the keynote speaker. Wells is an acclaimed Austen scholar. She is co-curating an exhibition at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City this summer called "A Lively Mind: Jane Austen at 250."

Weckesser Hall is located at 170 South Franklin Street in Wilkes-Barre on the campus of Wilkes University.

Parking is available along South Franklin Street and in the lot at the Sordoni Gallery at 141 South Main Street.
