Similar to fulltime faculty, adjunct instructors must have their instructional effort converted from credit hours and contact hours into formula hours. In general, an adjunct shall be limited to no more than 2 courses (or 4 one or zero credit science labs, or 1 course and 2 one or zero credit science labs) each for the fall, spring, summer 1 and summer 2 semesters and terms or no more than 30 credits per calendar year.
For the purpose of tracking hours worked to determine employee fringe benefit eligibility for adjunct instructors, one hour of classroom teaching shall be considered one hour worked each week during the time period of the academic semester or term in which the course is taught by the instructor in question. Additionally, for each one hour of teaching, adjunct instructors shall be given credit for two hours of worked time for non-instructional activities (e.g., class preparation time) during the time period of the academic semester or term in which the course is taught by the instructor in question. For example, an adjunct instructor teaching one three-credit class during the fall semester shall be considered as having worked nine hours during each of the fifteen weeks of the fall semester (comprised of one hour of classroom instruction and two hours of class preparation time per credit each week). Adjunct instructions teaching one or zero credit science labs shall be considered as having worked four hours per week during the time period of academic semester or term in which the course is taught by the instructor in question.
There will be no retrospective exceptions to this formula. Prospective changes may only be made with the written approval of the Provost.
