Wilkes University has a long-standing tradition of educating students who become health care professionals in a variety of community settings - large and small, rural and urban.
The Health Sciences Programs at Wilkes offers you a broad choice of medical and allied health professions.
More than 90% of students who have strong academic and service records, complete the Premedical Core, and receive Letters of Evaluation from the Health Sciences Committee, are accepted into professional schools.
This form is required to be on file with the Center for Health Sciences and Student Success in order for one to be considered a Wilkes University Health Sciences student. Please complete and submit this form to the Center for Health Sciences and Student Success. Please click on the link to access the form:
- Establish a file in the Center for Health Sciences and Student Success.
- Each year update the Health Sciences Declaration Form and submit a class schedule so that we can follow your progress and continue to share information with you.
- Begin to ask faculty to write evaluations for you to include in your file. Ask them to include information and examples on your character and personality, as well as your academic or professional performance.
- Have evaluations sent to the Center for Health Sciences and Student Success to be included in your file.
- Organize your course schedule to begin progress towards your academic major and prerequisites
for professional school.
- Work with your academic faculty advisor to accomplish this each semester.
- Maintain a high academic standing.
- Reference your professional schools of interest for minimum GPAs and professional exam scores for admission.
- Initiate individual meetings with the Center for Health Sciences and Student Success.
- In order to stay on track and organized during your time at Wilkes University, it is very important to meet with the Director of Health Sciences and Student Success Center at least once per semester.
- Be prepared with timelines and questions regarding your professional goals.
- Accelerated program (3+4) interest needs to be addressed at 1st meeting. Student must initiate meeting by September of freshman year.
- Attend bi-annual meetings held by the Center for Health Sciences and Student Success.
- Large group meetings will be held in the fall and spring of each year for important announcements and timeline review.
- Check your Wilkes email.
- It is imperative that you check your Wilkes email account on a regular basis.
- Important announcements, deadlines, invitations, etc. will be sent by the Center for Health Sciences and Student Success via this account.
- Attend Pre-Professional Society meetings.
- Networking is a key component of having a successful career. This forum will assist you with professional development and building connections among your peers and professionals.
- Complete shadowing and volunteer activities.
- Keep a record of your experiences (dates, times, responsibilities).
- Begin to ask supervisors and coordinators to write evaluations. Have this information sent to the Center for Health Sciences and Student Success to be included in your file.
- Submit the End of Year Essay.
- Annual submission to the Center for Health Sciences and Student Success. Include why you want to go into your chosen career and what has provided clarity regarding your decision over the given year. Provide personal experiences that have helped you confirm this career choice.
- Health Sciences Volunteer Experiences (volunteer form attached to email)
The Health Sciences and Student Success Center has working relationships with many organizations that offer diverse community service opportunities. These experiences will not only allow students to get more involved and serve those in need, but will also help improve interpersonal skills and gain experience that will assist in the preparation for professional school and a future career.
As a Health Sciences student, it is required to complete at least 20 hours of volunteer work per academic year. Students must submit the Volunteer Form to the Center for Health Sciences and Student Success to verify the completion of these required hours.
Shadowing is an excellent way to learn more about your chosen field is to shadow a health care professional already working in that role. Contacts for health professionals for shadowing experiences are available through the Center for Health Sciences and Student Success.
As a Health Sciences student, it is required to complete at least 20 hours of shadowing per academic year. Students much submit the Shadowing Form to the Center for Health Sciences and Student Success to verify the completion of these required hours.. In addition, students must complete a refection paper per academic year and submit it to the Center for review.
The Health Sciences and Student Success Center will maintain a file on your academic achievement and other activities in order to provide details to Wilkes’ Health Sciences Committee when you need a letter of evaluation for professional programs. Such letters are transmitted from the Center to the professional programs and provide important evaluation criteria on your behalf.
As a Health Sciences student, you must apply for a Letter of Evaluation written by the Health Sciences Committee. This application is due to the Center for Health Sciences and Student Success by the spring semester of the professional school application year. Traditional students would submit this application spring of junior year. 3+4 students would submit this application spring of sophomore year.
